GERMANY
In 2025, Germany remains a central economic power in the European Union but is experiencing political and social instability, driven by identity tensions, migration pressures, and growing ideological polarisation.
Economically, Germany faces a general slowdown. Persistent inflation, the high cost of the energy transition, and partial reindustrialisation linked to geopolitical tensions (notably with China) have affected business confidence. Protests by farmers and industrial workers increased throughout 2024 and into early 2025.
The far-right continues to gain ground. Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) became the leading party in several eastern Länder in the 2024 regional elections. This surge is fuelled by security concerns, immigration controversies, and a sense of abandonment in post-industrial areas. Revelations about "remigration" plans targeting foreigners and dual nationals have triggered major public backlash.
Security-wise, while the Islamist terrorist threat is contained, far-right extremism is now the main concern. Several planned attacks and attempted insurrections were foiled between 2023 and 2025, some involving former military or police personnel. The attacks in Halle, Hanau, and Hamburg have had a lasting impact.
Common crime remains relatively stable, though cities like Berlin, Cologne, and Düsseldorf report increased assaults on public transport and in vulnerable districts. Migrants are both victims and perpetrators of violence, fuelling divisive political rhetoric.
Tensions surrounding the war in Ukraine remain strong. Public opinion is split on military aid to Kyiv, while populist parties exploit the economic fallout—especially energy price hikes. Protests continue against arms deliveries to Ukraine and in favour of lifting sanctions against Russia.
Despite these issues, Germany remains a country governed by the rule of law where travellers face no major risks, provided they follow local security guidelines. Surveillance of critical infrastructure (stations, airports, places of worship) has been strengthened.
